For week #2 of Project Run and Play, the challenge was to sew something inspired by a fashion icon.  I can only imagine how many entries will have something to do with Audrey Hepburn (a good choice for sure)!

I was looking more for designers that inspire me, and no one inspires me more than Alexander McQueen.  Sadly, he left this world too soon, and while his designs walked the line between inspired and out of this world odd…at least they were interesting!

This dress is inspired by some of the current designs from his fashion house.   I was going to do it in black and try bleach dying, but I was afraid that would be an utter failure.  I will try it another time.  This is a design I drew out on freezer paper, ironed onto the fabric, and painted it lime green (the choice of Little Miss).  After painting in the main color, I took off the freezer paper and outlined everything in black paint with a small brush.  This took about 3-4 hours to paint the fabric.

Or two glasses of wine and two X-Men movies. 😉

The frosting on the cake are little iron on skulls in cream.  Alexander McQueen used a lot of skull motifs in his work.  I think these look a bit more like aliens, than skulls though! 😉

The overall dress design wasn’t too hard.  The front is cut in a sheath dress style for the stretch cotton poplin.   The back was cut at the waist, and then 2 peplum were cut for the lower half of the skirt.  I top peplum was cut wider, so it sticks out at the side just like I wanted.  The edges were finished with a  satin ribbon that matched the paint.  The back is closed with an invisible zipper.

The neckline is a stretch chiffon fabric, which Anya seemed to really like.  I will have to make a long sleeve “turtleneck” shirt for her this winter with a similar neckline.

Here she is modeling this for me with the rockstar leggings I made her a few weeks ago.

I need to get started on Week #3, which is using a white sheet.  I have a king size flat sheet all laundered and ready to go.  This is actually going to serve two purposes for me.  It will be part of the challenge, plus it will be her First Communion dress for the spring!  I know what I want to do, so I just need to get it done.

It is also Kailan’s turn for a few things, too.  Need to work on that, too.
