This is not my mother’s chili.  While everyone loves her chili, I have a different take on it.  I don’t put noodles in it…I don’t put celery in it…and I don’t put kidney beans in it.  This is my version.

1 lb hamburger
1 red or yellow pepper
1 onion
2-3 garlic cloves, minced
1 tsp onion salt
2 tsp garlic powder
1 TBSP cumin
1 tsp turmeric
1/2 tsp cayenne pepper
(you can replace these with chili powder if you have that)
1-2 cans black beans, rinsed (depends on how many beans you want)
1 can tomato sauce
3 cans diced tomatoes

Brown the hamburger with the minced onion, pepper and garlic.  When all cooked up, add the spices.  Mix around a bit and smell that spicey fragrance! Next add the rest, the tomatoes, tomato sauce and beans.  Add 1 can of water to the soup.  Mix everything up well and heat to a boil.  Then turn it down to simmer for a bit.  I usually simmer it at least 30 minutes to get the spices and flavors all incorporated together.  Taste and see if you think it needs anything else.   I usually add a bit more salt at the end.

To serve, ladle into bowls and plop a nice spoonful of sourcream and some shredded cheddar on top.  Yum!
