I finally got my version of this skirt done.

This is a skirt that is listed on Etsy.  I checked it out and wasn’t a huge fan on how she placed the ruffles on her skirt, plus the edges look like they were just serged and not hemmed.   This is my version:

The skirt goes perfectly with my ruffled up American Eagle boots I bought probably 4 or 5 years ago.  I love unique shoes!

I front curvy piece is just an overlay that I edged with a chocolate brown piping.  It made it much easier to turn it under and stitch it on the main skirt body.  I made it a bit too big, though.  If I make something like this again, I will make that piece shorter.

I did an invisible zipper on the side. 20140208-DSC_0030

The “bustle” in the back is a cut out that is trimmed in brown piping.  I recut the insert to have some extra room in it so the skirt would be easy to walk in, as this was a pencil skirt pattern.

Once I had the insert cut out, I cut my ruffles, hemmed and then gathered them.  I laid them on the insert, bottom up, and sewed them on.  To make it easier to place them right, I put a chalk line down for placing the ruffles.  I sewed one line on at a time.  Then I put a brown bias tape over the top of the ruffles.  I had only serged those seams and I wanted them to look more finished and covered.  The ruffle along the front I used a velvet ribbon to trim it up, which looked nicer than the bias tape.

To complete my skirt outfit, I made a top to go with it.  This is a light, slinky fabric that tended to move a bit too much.  I didn’t try to cut it on the bias, but it appears I did as the front neckline was a bit skewed.  Then I tried to do bias binding on the necklines instead of cutting a facing.  BIG mistake.  The back neckline is a hot mess, but HEY at least it is underneath so no one can really see it.  I drafted this off a batwing shirt I bought at the LOFT a few years ago.

My next Pinterest project are these arm warmers from CAbi.  I have them done (I am going to try to do a few a bit earlier for my “monthly” challenges, as I tend not to sew much at all during the summer), and I also did a tutorial that I will post in March.  Gives me time to actually edit those photos, which is proving to be a challenge lately.
