The camp that the children go to for a few weeks over the summer has a tie dye activity. Every. Single. Week.
Really, how many tie dye t-shirts does a kid need? Kai already did a tie-dyed t-shirt as part of his last week in school. He learned there were different ways to tie them in order to get different designs.
They still have several shirts from last year. I also gave them a pillowcase to dye last year. I am running out of ideas, here!
At first I thought to just give them some white fabric to dye and I would do something with it later. Anya said she wanted a skirt to match her shirt, so I went with that and made one up, per her request. She wanted a ruffled skort like one I bought (gasp!) for her. I measured that up, and added some bike shorts underneath for cartwheel-ability.
For Kai, I decided to do the main body of a shirt in a tie-dye and then I would use some solids to match the arms and neck binding to whatever colors he decided to use. I cut out the shirt front and back, so all I needed to do was assemble it.
They brought them home and they both did a great job!
I haven’t made up Kai’s shirt yet, but I plan to make the sleeves out of a deep navy/almost purple sweatshirt fabric for the sleeves. It will be a Fall/Winter shirt for him. He has plenty of tie-dye t-shirts, so he doesn’t need another one for the summer.
I really, really love how the skirt came out. The ruffles are a burnout, tissue knit, and the burnout part didn’t take any dye. It makes it look so fun!

ACTION SHOTS! Blurry…action shots!
I will get Kai’s shirt posted shortly. I will make sure to add on an inch or two for the summer growing season, as I am sure he will gain some mass during the summertime, like usual. 🙂
Today they are dying more stuff, as we are on week two of the camp. I will get that up as well once I get a chance to sew it up. Anya got a pair of white capri joggers with a lace overlay (I don’t think the lace will take the dye, though), and Kai has a light cream twill fabric. He wanted shorts, so we will see how it takes to being dyed!
Wow, every week, I can see how you are running out of ideas. The skirt is super cute and the tie dye looks fantastic. Great job.
This turned out really cute.
What a cool affect it has with the burnout fabric!
Thanks, Ladies! I was a bit surprised at how neat it looked after dying it, so that turned out well. 🙂 I hope the kids tie-dye from this week turned out alright. They had to leave them at camp, but will get them today.
