I remember as a child that we had a sense of wonder. We would see these fantastic things, like carousels or ferris wheels, and experience such awe that these magical creations existed. I was pondering this as I looked at the largest Christmas tree I have ever seen with my own two eyes at the MOA.
I question what our children’s barometer for awe will become. Kailan saw this monstrosity of a tree, so will he ever wonder at these types of gargantuan objects or shrug them off as typical?
When I grew up, we didn’t have a TV with cable. We were out in the boondocks and for most of my youth, we only got one channel…CBS. At that point in time, the programming really sucked. Brian was even worse off. They didn’t have ANY TV in his house for many, many years. Shocked aren’t you? Somehow we survived this tortured existence.
Since we were fairly sheltered in that respect, when we got off our respective farms, the world had much eye candy for us to devour. I remember the first time I came to the big city of St. Paul, MN. It was at night and the city was aglow with the lights. It gave me chills. When I came to live in the bustling Twin Cities, I have become more and more jaded at the spectacle of life we witness everyday. No more am I the girl from the farm that was in awe as I stood amongst the skyscrapers of Minneapolis. I am now a city girl.
The first, and only, time I visited New York City, it renewed my wonderment. Gotham is a buffet of sights and sounds. There was so much activity, and such an energy that ran through the city. I can see how people are drawn there and seldom leave. I, however, could not stay long. I need to see trees.
When Brian was there a man told him he needed to go see Central Park, because, “There are so many trees!”. Clearly someone that has never been to the country. If they were that excited about Central Park, they should venture out to Wisconsin, Minnesota, or heck, anywhere outside of a city.
They would be in awe. Perhaps that will be our children someday. We will stand beside them on the Road to the Sun, and they will marvel at the wonders in front of them. I know I do every time I am there.
