This is not my mother’s chili. While everyone loves her chili, I have a different take on it. I don’t put noodles in it…I don’t put celery in it…and I don’t put kidney beans in it. This is my version.
1 lb hamburger
1 red or yellow pepper
1 onion
2-3 garlic cloves, minced
1 tsp onion salt
2 tsp garlic powder
1 TBSP cumin
1 tsp turmeric
1/2 tsp cayenne pepper
(you can replace these with chili powder if you have that)
1-2 cans black beans, rinsed (depends on how many beans you want)
1 can tomato sauce
3 cans diced tomatoes
Brown the hamburger with the minced onion, pepper and garlic. When all cooked up, add the spices. Mix around a bit and smell that spicey fragrance! Next add the rest, the tomatoes, tomato sauce and beans. Add 1 can of water to the soup. Mix everything up well and heat to a boil. Then turn it down to simmer for a bit. I usually simmer it at least 30 minutes to get the spices and flavors all incorporated together. Taste and see if you think it needs anything else. I usually add a bit more salt at the end.
To serve, ladle into bowls and plop a nice spoonful of sourcream and some shredded cheddar on top. Yum!
Oh Stacy, that chili looks amazing! I want to have a bowl right now! YUM!
“O” man: I think we are havein chili tonight!!! LOL
My husband would die for this! I am drooling just looking at it.
Umm… Mr. Daddy – when were you gonna tell me you were cooking dinner tonight sweetie? 🙂
It sounds delish! So, Brian… what kind of wine goes best with this? *wink wink*
Thanks for sharing the recipe – it does sound really amazing!
Yum, I love chili – especially on a day like today when it’s wet and cold (HEY, 50s is cold for us!!). I’ve never done chili with black beans, that sounds good! I love to serve it over corn chips and with avocado.
Yum! That looks delish. I love chili, and I think my kids would, too, but my husband hates beans. Oh well!
If you aren’t making this dish child-friendly, and have loaded it with chilis or jalepenos, I would recommend a Riesling if you must drink wine. Honestly, beer will be a much better match. Be sure to keep it on the lighter side, lager, pilsner or a pale ale.
YUM YUM YUM !!!!!
[…] nothing that says cold weather like hot breads and thick soups. I served this as a side to my chili (with pinto beans instead of black beans – it’s all I had in the pantry!) and some honey […]
