The other day Brian recounted a tale…
He was working on something, in the kitchen of course, and I was away somewhere. Needing an extra pair of hands he called out to Kailan, ever present in front of the computer, and only a few feet away.
“Kai, can you come over to help me?”, his father requested of the child.
No response.
“Kailan, did you hear me?”, his father again asking him in a slightly annoyed voice.
No response.
“KAI!”
Finally his eyes release their grip on Nickjr.com, and he looks at his father, wide-eyed. “What?!”
“Did you hear me? I asked you to come over here.”
“Oh. Well, I was going to say, No.” He looks back at the computer screen.
A bit taken aback by such words, his father proceeded to expouse the rules of the household to the young lad. “Let me explain something to you that my father taught me. When I ask you to come help, I’m just being polite. It wasn’t a request, Son!”
Life is a constant learning process, and they are constantly learning that saying “No” to the parental unit is not an option LOL!
Oh no! So their inability to hear doesn’t end once they are past the age of THREE? That is terrible news. Adam does this to me ALL of the time. Actually, he is sitting at his computer right now…and I doubt he’d hear anything I told him. ha ha.
lol!!!!! I am not laughing at you, I am laughing with you! I sooooooo relate! I have one just like that too… constant gently reminders…. cute!
Catching up on my blog reading this morning, took a little break from that this week! So love your posts, Stacy! You have the most beautiful heart.. your blog is one of my most favorite places to visit.
Hugs and Happy Monday, my blog friend!

I think men are just born with the ability to tune things out–it definitely follows them into adulthood–sorry Little Brother 🙂 Actually one of the worst offenders I remember is our own father, especially if he was in front of the TV. Hmmm… maybe men just can’t concentrate on more than one thing at a time–not multitaskers like us women 😉
That story is too funny. I wish that I could eliminate the word “No” from my kids’ vocabulary.
I get the ignore a lot here, too…but “Well, I was going to say, No”?? that’s a new one. LOL!
Hmm, is it telling that Mr. Daddy hasn’t commented yet? LOL
I don’t think guys necessarily grow out of that phase. Put a fishing show on tv and my husband is deafer than I am 😉
Our little guy is learning the “pay attention” and “this is not a request” rules now too…
He was thinking about saying no but hadnt actaully gotten around to it until then?! They say the crazyest things! What a great line Brian’s father taught him. I’d say its pretty clear! Slowly but surely, they will learn, :o)
At least he was honest! 😉 The training never ends does it?
Thanks so much for linking up.
Don’t you love the intense focus on Kai’s face? How his eyebrows are arched in interest? You manage to catch all those little details… and you caught the “attitude” in your writing!
So… do we inspire eachother to capture both sides? You to write those funny things down and me to take better pictures? 🙂
Have a great day friend!
I thought that I had commented on this one…..guess I wasn’t paying attention. Maybe I was just being polite?????? LOL
I’ve heard this conversation several times at my house! All my kids (especially the boys) suffer from the same problem. My oldest is 15 and the youngest is 2. Good luck!
Funny how they keep having to learn this lesson over and over again !!!
hehehehehe…I know I shouldn’t laugh but that made me totally giggle. Mostly because I swear they never grow out of that phase. My 18 year old sits in front of the computer with headphones on it I swear he selectively decides to hear things all the time. 😉
Ha ha ha! It starts….that Kai is too funny!
OMG! That is too funny!
Grrrrrrr! Technology!!!!! Still, I think I was the same with books. My Mum had to drag me physically away from books when I was little 😀
I keep telling Small Boy that he needs to ‘look at me when I am talking to him!!!!!!!!!!!!’
