Did you know how easy it is to make a spice rub? I didn’t! At some point in the past year I have discovered that all those rubs in the store have pretty much the same things that I have in my cupboard. All you have to do it mix it all together, put it on the fish or meat and grill. Easy! It’s not rocket science, and it sure it fun to see what different flavors you can mix up with what you have on hand.
The rub on the fish pictured below has:
- Garlic powder
- Sea salt
- Brown sugar
- Ground ginger
- Lemon pepper seasoning
- Onion salt
- Cumin
I always put sea salt, pepper, garlic powder and brown sugar in my mixes. How much to mix? Well, just throw it in and taste it! The best way to learn is to just TRY! The reason I put brown sugar in is that it carmelizes with the spices. It doesn’t make it real sweet, it’s just a touch, but it gives great flavor.
Now go forth and experiment! I know I’m not the only one that bought a spice for a particular recipe and there is sits…getting old. Throw it into a spice rub to get some use out of it. Figure out which ones work well together and have some fun in the kitchen. 🙂
I served this grilled fish (salmon and tilapia) with cilantro rice and an avocado relish.
Recipe:
1 avocado
1 tomato
bunch of cilantro
1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp cumin
1-2 TBSP Lime juice
Dice up the avocado and tomato. Place in bowl. Chop up cilantro and add to the bowl. Mix with the salt, cumin and lime juice. All done! An easy, fresh tasting meal…the best kind!
