A few weeks ago Spoonflower.com had a free sample day, where they were trying to make some money for Heifer International. I just had to take advantage of the situation and ordered 3 fabric samples to check color and the different types of fabric they stocked.
Note…I haven’t washed these yet so not sure about colorfastness. This is just the initial printing. These were done at 150 dpi in working CMYK color space. I was doing it just under the wire, so I just used some designs I had created in the past 6 months or so. The samples are 8″ x 8″, so I cropped a few of them to 4″ x 4″ to get them to tile.
Tuscany colorway – My favorite! This is the organic cotton knit and printed the most true to color. It has a really nice hand to it, too.
Black Damask – This is the Upholstery weight. The black didn’t print true, but it is pretty dark still. It has a nice weight to it, but it’s not soft. This would be good for upholstery or pillows.
Jester in paisley – Least favorite of all of them in organic cotton sateen. It really didn’t print very well. It looks more gray than blue, but the fabric feels nicer than their regular cotton.
I think the key is to make the color brighter than you want it to appear on the fabric. My first design was pretty bright and it turned out so well on the fabric. I think I may need to order some of that in a larger quantity. It’s pretty spendy though, so I’ll have to have a specific thing to make in mind before I order.
That’s my creativity this week! Luckily I have this entire week off of work, so I have time to SEW! The guys are going to be here again working, so I’m happy I can be here to cook them some lunch and not be too rushed making dinner. I’m also planning on having my annual trek to the big giant fabric warehouse, too. Maybe I will take a picture so you can see what I mean when I say it’s a big place.
Oh, and Kai’s first day of school is today. I’m going to get some pictures of my big little man getting on the bus and then I’m meeting some girlfriends for breakfast. I could get used to this!
That’s awesome that you were able to take advantage of that sample sale. It will make it so much easier to order when the time comes. I hope enjoy your week off and get lots accomplished. Good luck to Kai.
Hope Kai has a good first day of school!
I like that black damask one. I think you’re probably right that brightening the image would lead to a sharper inpring on the fabric. 🙂
Oh, I like the black damask, too…if the black was truer, I could find some uses for it!! how did breakfast sans kids go??
Love the black damask!
So cool that you get to design your own fabric! Have you calibrated your monitor? If not, it is probably set too cool and bright…when I calibrated mine, I was shocked at how dark and warm it was – thought it was soooo strange! But, my prints print out nearly perfect without color correction now.
Letme get this right…are you printing on fabric????
