Last evening was beautiful. It was in the mid-70’s and sunny – a perfect spring evening. We could smell the lilacs in the air and the rain storm from the previous evening made everything smell so fresh as it washed away the murkiness of winter.
We went on a walk around our wonderful little lake, taking baby girl in the wagon and big brother rode his bike. The water on the lake was so still, interrupted only by the ripples of the ducks and geese as they floated by us.
Kailan loves to ride his bike on our walks. He pedals ferociously at times, trying to feel the wind in his hair and the freedom it entails. Unfortunately, despite frequent warnings, he doesn’t love to pay attention to where he is going.
At one point on the path there is about a 4 foot area where it drops off into a shallow creek (you can see where I am going with this can’t you?). A whole 4 feet out of a 1/2 mile.
We had just turned around and were about the furthest from home as we started back. It was getting to be time for bed so we needed to get the little urchins home. Such a nice evening.
We stopped the wagon to get Anya back into it as she had been trying to walk (I would call it meandering), and then wanted to be carried. It was time to give mommy’s back a rest. Kailan went on ahead and we told him to watch where he was going.
“What??”
“Kailan watch out!!”
Yes, he wasn’t watching and ended up going into the little creek. The dirty little creek. He was sopping wet. Daddy got him and his bike out of the creek amidst the wailing and crying of a water-shocked little boy. Kailan was crying and moaning, “I’m dirty!!!”. Of course, there was no sympathy from mommy and daddy, and being the awful parents that we are….we were laughing.
We told him he had to ride his bike back home or we were going to leave it there. He reluctantly got on his bike and pedaled home, meanwhile wailing, “I’m DIRTY!!” about every 5 seconds while his parents chuckled behind his back. Eventually the wailing decreased and we arrived home. He was promptly thrown in the tub and his stinky, dirty, wet clothes and coveted Spider-man shoes were promptly thrown in the washer.
While on the road home, his daddy said, “Kai I should resign myself to the fact that you are never going to play football, shouldn’t I?”
“I’m Diiiirrrrrttttyyyyyyy!”
Thanks for the giggle. I have to say if it were Zoe… I’d laugh too.
Maybe next time you can remind him he might end up in the creek again if he’s not watching??? You can hope.
Oh, we can only hope! These younguns aren’t really known for paying attention, but maybe the memory of being sopping wet will help him pay attention.
He’s the cutest diiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiirrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrttttttttttttttttyyyyyyy little boy I’ve ever seen.
Sometimes I wish my boys would care that they are diiiiiirrrrrttttyyyy!
This story did get a laugh out of me.
BTW, the first photo is gorgeous.
awww, that’s so sweet. 🙂
love that picture of the tree and the water. beautiful!!
I am laughing out loud…love the story. I’d be laughing at Nadia, too! Funny thing is, my little tomgirl probably wouldn’t care about being diiiirty.
