Let me present our current plantings and flowers that we have going on. These hardy little gems have survived bunnies, deer and well, us. Our green thumbs are bordering on a very dark green…almost into that brown territory, but not quite. Let’s just say we aren’t very good at watering our plants and put it at that. We generally hope that nature takes over where we fail miserably.
We always have vast aspirations. We have done a lot of landscaping and planting since we moved here 3 some years ago. We added raised planting beds, one where a tree used to reside so we didn’t have to get rid of the stump after it died on us. Another around what we called the “dead body”. We had a mound of dirt along the fence line that was, well, about the size of a dead body. It was good black dirt, so we put some nice stones around it and tilled it up…luckily we only found a lot of worms and no rotting corpses. Whew.
We have added lots of bushes and perrenials. Invariably some always die on us so we have to get more. I’m looking forward to when we won’t have to spend quite so much on plantings every spring.
One thing that I also love is garden art. Little fairies and angels just add so much to our garden. This is the first year that I have bought some, so I look forward to buying more. Nothing with gazing globes though. Is there anything that says, “Throw me so I may shatter in a thousand pieces,” more than that? Oh wait, Kailan already did that…in the garden store. Yes, child, they don’t bounce. They SHATTER.
Flowering Ivy and White Roses (we had no idea that the ivy flowered and we were pleasantly surprised this spring!)
New planter that we bought to anchor this corner, and we put a petunia hanging plant in it. Petunia’s like sun so it should work well. Hmmm…can’t remember the name of the purple flowers here. They are perennials though and very nice…but the bees really, really like them. We probably shouldn’t have planted them right there at the beginning of our walk up to the house. But the bees are generally so engrossed they don’t notice people…unless of course you scream and run away. That might peak their interest.
My new fairy and our iris’. They are almost finished flowering. These were planted when we got here, but I transplanted them from the front of the house to the back since they had been growing over each other and had been neglected for what I expect was a long time. If you are interested in the fairy, you can find it here at Design Toscano. They have a great selection of garden art.
That’s all for now. I’ll take more pictures later when our annuals start to fill in and our other plants sprout up. Last year I didn’t take many pictures, so shame on me for that! I’ll make up for it this year.
Lovely. I have little critters all around my garden, too. Some of them even light up for interest after dark! One think I don’t have, though, are petunias. I know they’re supposed to be one of the simplest things to grow, but I kill them every time. I’ve finally just given up…
So pretty. My thumbs sound about the same color as yours. My mother-in-law has high hopes for a daughter to join her in the quest for garden beauty… and I’m afraid I am disappointing her greatly. Oh well.
Beautiful landscaping. I believe the purple flowers are called Speedwell, bees do love them.
Lovely garden. I adore the garden fairy and iris. Living in the mountain forest doesn’t give me much chance to garden because the animals eat everything. I miss it. But nature does a pretty decent job around here without my brown thumb’s assistance.
Here’s a solution to the shattering gazing balls. Mind you, my husband thought this up, and Stacy, you know his mind doesn’t work quite like the rest of the world, but… you get an interesting-looking bowling ball at a garage sale and spray it with a clear glossy coating, have a little stand to put it on or in, and walla! Shatter-proof gazing ball!
You have a very beautiful garden–all your hard work shows!
Thanks everyone!
Melody, there are limits to what we can plant due to the deer and bunnies around us, too. Nothing like you, I’m sure, but we still have the varmits around us!
Susie, I think Brian is pretty against the gazing globe thing overall. He doesn’t think it’s artistic enough! Good idea though. I think the kids would still try to play with it, though. Hey, it’s a ball, so it must be their’s right?? 🙂
