Notice a theme anywhere?? Yes, we love us some fantasticalness for our house. This bathroom is the upstairs guest bath, aka my bathroom. I love the soft green color shown here.
What we did:
-
- Took off the wallpaper and patched the walls. Painted it a light green.
- Replaced the light fixture with a new one. As in the rest of the wall light fixtures in this house, they just took a hammer and made a hole in the wall. There weren’t boxes behind any of them. Morons.
- Replaced the towel holders and toilet paper holder.
- Took off the nasty glass tub door.
- Made the valance and curtains. I used the valance rods that were there previously. It had a horrendous flower pattern on it.
- Made the flower arrangement on the counter.
- Replaced all the wall plates.
- Artwork is a few Amy Brown prints (thanks Christina!), plus a few different style of prints. One is a reproduction oil painting of A Midsummer’s Eve that Brian picked up on one of his travels.
Most of the decorating items I put in rooms have just been picked up along the way. If you have a consistent style of items that you love, it is pretty easy to just pick things up that are on sale. I love to shop sales and go directly to the clearance section all the time. If there is something I love, and don’t have a place to display it at the moment, I just store it away for future use. Plus, I like to change things ever so often, too, since I get bored of things after awhile.
DIY Nightmares: When we bought the house, the room was covered in wallpaper. Very old, dirty and dingy wallpaper. I couldn’t believe they hadn’t replaced it previously. When we took the mirror off the wall we could see the original color and see just how faded it was. It was a light pink on the rest of the walls, but under the mirror it was a dark pink. Dark pink with cream seashells *shudder*. We are thinking it was original.
Then, when I was scraping off the wallpaper and was on the floor, I looked up and saw gum stuck under the rim of the counter top every six inches. N-A-S-T-Y. I heard the previous owner wasn’t the best housekeeper, and she obviously wasn’t. I had to scrape that crap off, which had obviously been there awhile. It was stuck on pretty thoroughly. Ick.
Lovely room, just like the rest of your house. It sounds like that place was in pretty poor repair when you got it, but you have done an amazing job breathing new life into it and making it your own.
Thanks Christina! 🙂 Overall the house was in fairly good condition, it was just the decorating that really was awful and needed to be updated. We replaced just about every light fixture and have been working on removing ALL THE WALLPAPER. Lots and lots of wallpaper…
I have dreams of redoing the kitchen, replacing the carpet with hardwood or tile, and finishing the basement. Hopefully, eventually.
Gorgeous bath. Stacy, you’ve done a beautiful job with your home, and you’ve gotten me excited about decorating again. I love hitting the clearance sections first when shopping for decorative items.
Keep sharing your home. 🙂
