Everyday at daycare we bring home some sort of artistic work from Kailan, and occasionally Anya.  We think that Kailan is bound to be an artist; as most of his “paintings” look fairly similar to a lot of modern art.  We should try to sell some on Ebay, truely.

Early on and being a first time parent, we would dutifully put his project for the day in a pile to put in a scrapbook or keepsake box.  After the first month we realized how idiotic that was.  All of the projects were just busy work for the daycare teachers to get two seconds of breathing time in the midst of the chaos that is a classroom full of toddlers.  Now, we look at them, ask Kai was his depiction was (bug, car, elephant…), get an unintelligible answer, wait for him to turn his back and throw it away.  Occasionally, we will put one up to share his talent with any guests that come over, as if saying “See how lucky we are to have these beautiful works of “art” and don’t you want one?  We have plenty!”

The latest project to grace the gallery (a.k.a. refrigerator) is Kailan’s depiction of a bug.  It is a masterpiece of colored construction paper on a white backdrop.  It appears to be several bugs trod upon by adult feet, thus showing Kailan’s pain as a toddler being constantly trod upon by us Parents and various other caregivers.  We are forever demanding that he eat, take baths and not wack his sister in the head with his light saber.  Can you feel his pain, his frustration?  Can you feel it??

Occasionally we are graced by observing his creative process at home.  He has also taken his sister on as his pupil and teaching her all about the intricacies of art.  Of course, that is when she isn’t trying to eat the markers and chalk.
