These pictures were taken at Thanksgiving at Brian’s aunt and uncle’s house. That is his cousin Laura teaching the kids how to play a chord on the piano. It is always such a nice time to get together with all of them. We just don’t get together enough during the year.
We stayed overnight at my parents on Thursday, and in the morning some neighbors brought by an interesting find for my dad. My dad is a taxidermist, so during the gun season he is pretty busy. It is not unusual for hunters to bring by their kills during Thanksgiving dinner. Those boys are a bit avid. 😉
Anyways…what the neighbor boys found were two good sized deer with their horns locked together in a marsh. One had already died, so the youngest (at 13) shot the deer that was still alive and his older brother (18) tagged the other one. They called their dad and the DNR and the two boys spent the rest of the day getting them out of the very cold swamp all locked together. Here is a link to the picture, since I know not everyone likes to look at dead deer. 😉
My dad figures the one big one should score at least 140 for Boone and Crocket, but both were pretty big body and horn-wise. The boys are going to get them mounted up full size and hopefully sell them to help fund their college educations. Scheels apparently bought something similar for $40,000 a few years back. Dad called the local paper to get someone out for pictures and the boys’ story before he started on them. Hopefully their plan will work!
Hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving and holiday weekend. It wasn’t as relaxing as I would have liked, with the traveling and then I had two photoshoots over the weekend. I’m done, though. No more photoshoots scheduled for at least a month! Time to enjoy the holidays, and the birthdays that are coming up.
The little one was estimated at mid-140’s, while the larger of the two was estimated at 178, qualifying it for Boone & Crocket (minimum score of 170 required). A scale of sufficient size wasn’t available, but both likely topped 200 field-dressed. It’s hard to see in the pictures, but one is an 8 pointer and the other is a 10 pointer. Neither would break any records by themselves, but actually finding them locked in battle is what makes this so extraordindary. The game warden estimated boys missed the actual battle (and fatal stabbing of the 10 pointer) by less than 2 hours.
I was trying to get the link to the article in the paper, but it was limited to subscribers only. Now to wait for the press to spread and find out whether these two monsters can help put the kids through school.
I found a place that put the story online:

I obviously wasn’t listening as well as Brian. 😉
Wow! What an interesting story. It would be great if it helped the boys with college.
sounds like you had a good time with family…and that is always great.
And I just can’t figure why anyone would not want to look at a picture of a deer…Dead or not???? go figure……
That is a unique lock for sure….
hope it works out for them.. looks like your Dad will have his hands full with that mounting job..
That deer story was fascinating and so far from my experience! (city gal..no huntin’ here)I can’t even imagine how hard it is going to be for your dad to do his thing on those two!
