Playing in the dirt
We spent the weekend with Brian’s family and the kid’s got the opportunity to play in the dirt…a much beloved pasttime.
The details: f3.5, 1/2000 shutterspeed, ISO 200, white balance set for cloudy, and I used my kit zoom lens at 18mm.
The editing: I underexposed the picture a little so I could get some of the blue in the sky. I had to lighten it up using curves, and then added contrast using a brightness/contrast layer mask. This added too much yellow to his face, so I erased his face from that layer. I adjusted the color since their was too much yellow overall. Then I used the sponge tool to saturate the colors of the grass and sky. Finally I used the burn tool around the outside to darken the edges.
like your comp on this one. my kids love the dirt too. of course, at julian’s age, he is still eating it.
Looks like fun!
Such concentration! He is one cute little boy. Thanks for the info, too!
I like the composition of this one. The elements included in the background paint a story of playing on the farm. Always love your editing and that you share details.
Plus, you have such a handsome subject. 🙂
I love how you’ve included the sky. Wonderfully composed.
This shot just draws you in. Thanks for sharing how you did it as well. I have to try some of these things!
There’s so much to look at in this photo and it’s so vivid. I love your post processing methods!
love that shot… thanks for the technical details. I need to work more with layers.. this will help.
Awesome compsition! Seeing all that land and sky gives such a sense of vastness. And yes, what kid doesn’t love playing in the dirt!?
The silo is such a strong element to the photo too! And thanks for the processing, as always–now I have some new things to try!
He’s really enjoying his playtime – dirt is such an underated toy now a days. My guys love to get good and messy. 🙂

Love the way you compose, tone and saturate your photos. In this one, you I could actually imagine what he is trying to do.
