So, who’s already thinking about Halloween costumes?? *me, waving my hands wildly*
In the not-so-distant past I may have been inclined to buy a costume for my children. That was before I became super mom, and no longer required sleep and thrived on self-induced stress. I haven’t had time to make myself a cape yet, but it is on my to-do list. 😉
This year the little prince wants to be a pirate or Spider-man or Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle. Oh, you marketing machines, how you have poisoned our son’s mind!
I think we have settled on a pirate, so he will be one of just about every other boy in his class that is a pirate. The others will be Spider-man, but the verdict is still out whether they will be the “good” or the “bad” one. Oh, decisions. I initially thought I would buy him a pirate outfit, so for the low, low price of $30 I bought him one at Target. I took it out of the package, and while he salivated over the PIRATE!! I looked at how cheaply it was made, and the cheapskate within me with the coal black heart put the PIRATE!! costume back in it’s packaging to be returned. I did let him keep the little foam cutlass and the eye patch. I’m not completely heartless.
I am not a total cheapskate, though, since I wanted to try to find some real pirate type boots and I found them on Ebay. So, for the low, low price of $20 (half of which was shipping…I overlooked that part before I bid), Kailan now has a lovely pair of PIRATE!! boots. They are currently being worn every chance he gets, so I may just get my money’s worth out of them. In summary, we have a pirate hat, boots, cutlass and eye patch, on which I have spent at least $40. Now I have to make the clothes for it, and I hope that I have enough fabric in my stash to throw something together. He’s so lucky I love him so much!
Now, the princess is going to have a Renaissance style dress, and we bought her a dried flower headpiece with ribbons on it at the Ren Fest a few weekends ago. I got part of the dress done last week, but now I have to rip it apart, since it doesn’t look right. *sigh*
I have a month, right??
And I can’t wait to see it all done! The girls want to be monsters so I will make them groovy monsters. Furry fabric using a sheath dress pattern. Striped tights. That’s what I have planned anyway. I always scramble in the end but I enjoy making the costumes every year. And we dress as a family so I have to make 4 costumes. I should get on that…
You go Supermom! I’ve always made costumes and last year the boys whined for the cheap store bought crap…I was outnumbered 3:1 and caved. Then I moped for the entire month.
I’m currently working on the boys’ costumes…one leopard and one monkey. I have the pants and hoodies dyed the appropriate colors and about half the spots painted on the leopard. I still need to sew ears and tails and belly panels…
Gees, all you Super Moms are making me feel bad. But I don’t have one tiny little bit of seweing ability, so Nadia gets a store bought costume. I don’t even know what it will be yet. I’ll just let her pick something out at the store…but my bet’s on puppy or kitty.
MelodyA – That sounds so fun! I bet the girls will be adorable in those costumes…I can’t wait to see that!
Melody – I know how you feel…I was hoping Kai would choose the pirate so I had some hope of making it. If he chose a superhero, I was going to convince him that I would make him his own personal superhero costume.
Alissa – I remember your post about the costumes…I can’t wait to see those done, too.
Christina – Don’t feel bad, dear! I bought their costumes in the past, too. Well, I made Anya’s last year and tried to get Kai to be a wood elf but he chose the dragon I bought him on ebay the year before. He cried when I tried to put it on him the first time, but last year he didn’t want to take it off!
Ay, would love to see photos of the costumes when you are done! I always had homemade costumes growing up (ghost, roller skater girl, witch – lame huh) so I say good for you mama, mine are going to get poodle skirts made by me to wear. I have tried getting those cute costumes before but the oldest would never wear them so I am dressing them in something that is as close to what they normally wear as possible. Tick tick tick – that is my own timer ticking down to Halloween and I haven’t started the costumes yet 🙂
