…in answer to that question of whether I save money by making clothes for my little princess, and occassionally, the prince.
This would be the reason why. I have a bit of a fabric obsession and I can’t help myself but to purchase at least a lot little when I go to the fabric store. I always find something that will make such a CUTE outfit (if I ever get the time, that is!).
Exhibit #1 – Fabric that I purchased to make clothes last summer. After a bit it became rather apparent that baby girl had more that enough clothes for summer so I stopped. There a fabulous green toile and an Asian lotus print in the bunch…I can just see a new twirly dress with a cream guaze peasant under-dress with the toile…and a short-sleeve wrap-front Asian inspired dress with the lotus fabric. *dream, dream, dream…wake-up, that has to wait!*
As for the boy…I made him one button up shirt with giraffes, alligators and rhinos that he didn’t want to wear…so he got nuthin’ for the rest of the summer. Except, of course, his “K” cape. Sorry, kiddo, I don’t do Spiderman.
Exhibit #2 – Fabric that I purchased to make clothes for winter, some of which is from LAST winter. Honestly, there is more yet. Baby girl is currently wearing short pants since I bought her only a few new pairs of jeans. You see, I had good intentions of working on her new fall/winter closet in late summer. Yeah…that didn’t happen.
There is fabric for leggings and cuddle fleece fabric for fuzzy pants, and lets not forget the matching swing top, jumper, dress…such fun!
Right now I am slowing moving through the piles. First order of business is getting the Halloween costumes completed. I did manage to make a few new pairs of pants for Anya. I didn’t want the other kids at daycare making fun of her “high-water” pants. 😉 I’ll get pictures soon…when they are clean, as I just HAD TO put them on her to wear already. 😀
A girl after my own heart. I sewed up a storm when the Baby Angel was little, I was always picking up oddments and end of rolls with some brilliant project in mind! Then we reached the age where she didn’t want to wear ‘Mummy-made’ clothes. It had to be Urban Angel or Target so that she had the latest ‘fashion’ item (and let’s face it…that’s cheaper anyway). Now with this Summer’s onset of the new look ‘baby doll’ sun dresses I am hopeful I can convince her to let me sew for her again. Maybe I can use up some of the piles of materials, like yours, which have built up in the cupboard in a somewhat obsessive manner over the last few years 😀

That is some great fabric. You’re going to have the cutest-dressed kids on the block, whether you save money doing it or not!
I here ya about the fabric binge. And it’s 10x worse if I go to the fabric store without the girls. Costumes, costumes, gotta get on that, too…
Thanks ladies on the fabric choices! I am not kidding when I say the ladies at the fabric mill know me by sight. I go over lunch at least 2 times a month (if not more!) and buy fabric. Now I just have to make it up! I have Anya’s top dress done for her Halloween costume and boy, is it cute. 🙂
arizaphale – I think the key for older girls may be letting them pick out the fabric. Those baby doll dresses are so cute. My big thing is making shirred top dresses. Easy, easy and super cute! I am not looking forward to when she voices her opinions!

Sewing is so fun! If you want to start out sewing, simple elastic waist pants are easy to do. Especially for little ones…since they are little. I made a lot of my maternity pants when I was preggo and I could make a pair in about an hour, and that is with putting in the maternity panel. When using patterns, I usually measure the inseam, outseam and waist and compare it to the pattern, taking into account the seam/waist allowances and adjust from there. The first one usually doesn’t fit the best, but the second pair does, since I can tell what I did wrong and then adjust again. So, don’t use your best fabric on the first one. 🙂
So many gorgeous fabrics! It reminds me of my mom’s sewing stacks. I always think I would love to sew, but then every time I try it, I end up spending more time untangling knots and being frustrated than actually sewing…I just don’t have that talent. I’ll live vicariously through your gorgeous creations!
Ooooohhhh…you are addicted to fabric like I am to paper! I just want to run my fingers through all those bolts of fabric, so beautiful!
I can’t wait to see what you come up with. I was all set to make Halloween costumes, bought the patterns and everything and then E. found a fairy costume that was amazingly cheap and she fell in love with it. And A. decided that she wanted to be, well…Cinderella, of course. So maybe next year.
Now I need to get my sewing machine out and put elastic back in all the dress-up skirts and mend all the things that are falling apart over here. Could I sweet talk you into doing some of that for me? I’d make you a scrapbook page in return?! 🙂
Christina, I know frustration, too. I had to redo the top dress for Anya’s costume 3 times!! I set it aside for a week or so since I didn’t want to do it again. But…it’s done now. Yay!
LOL Carrie…I think you can probably handle the elastic and mending, but my hubby has been waiting on me mending the holes in his dress pants for quite some time. I have priorities, People. 😉
Sewing is such a wonderful talent, the fabric looks great
