‘Tis the season of giving! We give to charities all year round, but it is mostly just money, which they do need. It is just nice when you can do something a little more personal and, in kind, include your children. I read about this charity earlier this year and just saw it in my bookmarks today. I clicked on it, and apparently this week is their collection week (November 12-19)!
In case you have never heard about this charity, you can find the information here and also use that website to see if there is a collection site in your area. Basically, you take a shoebox (of which I have plenty!), wrap it up pretty and fill it with toys for children in a certain age range. Then the people of Samaritan’s Purse deliver these gift boxes to needy children around the world.
We are planning on taking the kids to the store with us to find toys for a little boy and girl in their age range and start a holiday tradition of giving in which they can participate. I’m really hoping that we don’t end up frustrated because the kids want to have everything for themselves. I think this age is a bit borderline for this project, but I’m hoping they understand it enough. It is important to show our children emphathy to others and that not everyone gets a Transformer for Christmas just because they ask for it.
I am trying to think of other things to do, because I do feel we have been blessed. I don’t think either one of us thought we would be in such a place in our lives by our mid-thirties. It is important to give back when you can.
I also wanted to share this website the hubby found and passed on to me. This is a website that is geared to expanding your vocabulary AND feeding the hungry. Everyone wins! Click on the banner and see what it’s about:
Ooh, I may do that in place of the Angel tree…
Thanks for sharing. I’m off now to check out that site…
We just filled our boxes for Operation Christmas Child, my girls love doing this.
We have done Angel Tree for the last several years…but I think this would be even better! Nadia’s a bit young to “get it” this year, but maybe next? thanks for sharing!
I may have to steal your tradition, too, Stacy. I think the girls would LOVE to do something like that. Thanks for the heads up.
We try to do a “clean-out” of the playroom especially at Christmas, and give the toys to a charity, but I love the idea of letting them actually get to pick out the stuff to put in the box! Awesome.
Well, glad to have inspired and informed…that’s what I’m here for! 😉 😀
The Angel tree is a good one, too. Heck, they are all good, just to help another in need.
The Christmas shoeboxes is one of our traditions. Did you know you can do these year round?
Wow, the other site sounds great, too.
