Last night I took the kids for a walk around the neighborhood and we ended up at one of Kai’s schoolmates house. Kai played with Lydia and her big brother Jack while I spoke “Mom Stuff” with their mom. We ended up out in the backyard after a fashion and their neighbor’s kids were out in their own backyard, too. Lydia and Jack ran over to play with them, and Kai followed very slowly. Kai is so shy around new kids/adults. He got halfway into their yard and turned back. Then he just stood on the border of the yards and said “Rydia (Lydia)”, over and over again. Then he gave up and went to playing with Lydia and Jack’s toys until they came back.
It is so funny how at this age they play around each other mostly, and not with each other, but still crave the social aspect of having their friends near them. It was really sweet to see that, but a bit sad that Kai did not feel included or brave enough to go play with them.
Hopefully he will eventually get a bit braver and be able to deal with new situations and people better. For right now he is our shy little boy.
