You know when I first heard about this dish, it just didn’t seem too appetizing. But…it is yummy! It is a bit of a pain to prepare due to the prep work. I do this while I’m also working on my Sunday night dinner and get it all prepared in the crockpot to be able to plunk it in the heater on Monday morning.
Recipe:
10-12 large cabage leaves
Filling:
1lb ground beef
1 cup cooked rice
1/2 cup tomato sauce
1/2 tsp nutmeg
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp pepper
Sauce:
1 small can tomato paste
1/2 cup tomato sauce
1 1/2 cups water
Remove about 10-12 large leaves from the cabbage. Pour boiling water over the cabbage to wilt the leaves. Combine the filling. Place about 1/4 cup meat mixture on each leaf and roll firmly. Stack in electric slow cooker. Combine tomato sauce, tomato paste and water; pour over stuffed cabbage. Cover. Cook on low setting for 8-10 hours.
This sounds just like the dolma (I think that’s what it’s called) recipe that my MIL taught me. She’s Armenian. It is very yummy.
I agree it does remind me a of a dolma too. But, no one in my family eats cabbage except for me so I’ll just have enjoy your recipe from afar today. 🙂
Yummy, I love cabbage rolls. But I don’t make them anymore now that I have a recipe for a very easy casserole. Tastes very simialr without all the work!
I love dolma too! I discovered a couple years ago that you can buy those canned and they’re actually quite good.
I had to look up dolma on wiki since I never heard of that food before! It does look very similar.
I love dolma, so I will have to try this! And love that we both have food fridays!
My grandmother used to make these for us when I was very young. I loved them, I haven’t had one in over 30 years. I will try them on my family, Thanks so much,
Greg
We call it Hulupsie or pigs in the blanket. This is how my mom made it but, I put in that special german ingre. which is cream. With the tomato sauce I also add cream and than pour over top of hulupsie.
