Sorry, two posts today, but I need to vent a little!
So, I get a call around noon from daycare that I need to come pick up Kai because they think he might have Fifth’s Disease. Uck! He came home yesterday with a rash on his cheeks, and I was thinking he might have had some allergy or something. We’ve never had that in our house before.
I picked him up, and the teacher said that there was another kid that had it last week in the pre-K room. She said she hadn’t heard of it before last week. Hmmmm…not good. I told her that I knew it was bad for the pregnant moms to be exposed to it and had they told them?? They had no idea.
Am I wrong in thinking that SOMEONE at the daycare should have known to inform the many pregnant moms that Fifth’s Disease was in the daycare?? There are three just in Kai’s room that I know. I sent an e-mail to a few that I knew letting them know. At least Kai was out for the most contagious part of it last week, since when the rash happens they aren’t contagious anymore.
After the doctor, who told me he was “textbook Fifths”, we went to Target so Kai could pick out a present for Anya (that was painful). The daycare called me on my cell to check to make sure it was Fifth’s, since after me telling them that it was dangerous they must have actually done a little research. I told them I already told a few of the mom’s. Apparently, one had already called…I think she may have given them a piece of her mind. 😉
Normally, I’m pretty happy with our daycare, but this time I was pretty shocked they didn’t know better.
Yikes! WE did the whooping cough years ago. That was fun. Did you know even with immunizations you can get it? Lovely piece of information they leave out before injecting our little ones with all kinds of stuff.

Wow! That is pretty stupid on the daycares part!!
Hope Kai is better soon!!!
Oh that stinks. Here’s hoping it gets resolved soon. And that daycare learned SOMETHING from it.
It sounds like they really dropped the ball! And, if Kai already has the rash and isn’t contagious anymore, why did he have to leave?
Oh, I know! I was so shocked they dropped the ball on this. Alissa, he could have gone back after the “mystery rash” was identified by the doctor, but it was 2pm so I just kept him home for the rest of the day. He’s actually feeling pretty good now, but was sick before the rash appeared.
The positive is that he’s feeling better–a friend of mine was pregnant last summer and her son got it. There was much freaking out, but the positive is that a large percentage of us have been exposed when we’re children and won’t have any problems with it even if we are pregnant. Still…it’s pretty common. You’d think SOMEONE there would have known to warn everyone! My class visited an elementary one semester and we ended up exposing the kids to someone with Fifths, and we made sure we told all the girls, even though I hope to God none of the 14-year-olds were pregnant!
wow…yeah, i know it is a little different, but at Em’s preschool they send out a note to all the parents if the kids have been potentially exposed to ANYthing…Fifths disease, pinkeye, etc…there isn’t much you can do to protect your kids from getting it, but at least you can be aware of it and on the watch!
poor kai! i hope all gets back to normal there soon!
Sheesh, that’s pretty apalling – a daycare of all places should know enough to notify parents. They can’t always control when kids get exposed, but they also have a responsibility to let people know. I’m glad Kai’s doing better now, but really, that’d leave me feeling unsettled.
YES they should have said something. This is the first year that I have heard about it. I got notices from both of my girls’ schools and have a mom friend who has it and has been soooo miserable. Yikes, glad he’s feeling better.
Why in the world would they not learn about that kind of thing in a daycare?!!!
