We had a little storm the other night. Little as in wake up the kids at 3:30 am and go into the basement. After being woken up from a sound sleep by the thunder, I went downstairs to check the tv to see if they had any warnings. There was nothing on but infomercials at that hour. Suddenly the wind started to blow and the rain was coming down horizontally. Not good. I met Brian on the stairs with the kids, and we took them into the basement. You know it has to be bad if Brian was worried. He prefers to stand outside and watch the thunderstorms.
It was scary. The winds topped 70 mph in our suburb and there was a bit of damage. Our fence was the only one facing the open marsh that didn’t have chunks missing out of it. Lighting struck our little crabapple tree in the front shearing off a big branch. We tried to go down to the lake, but the path was obstructed by fallen trees. I hate to see all the big trees taken down. It takes so long to grow them.
Here are some pictures of the damage:

Lightpost bent to the ground by the wind (less than 1/2 mile from our house)
Did I mention that I hate thunderstorms? Especially storms that happen at night since you can’t see what’s going on. At least no one was hurt in the storm, that is what is important.
Wow, that was some storm! Glad you’re OK. I used to be the one standing outside watching the storm, until last year when we were in the tornado (at night). Now I’m just getting back to where I ignore the wind and rain instead of pacing around, looking out the windows, and watching the TV for warnings.
Goodness! So glad everyone made it through that one. Mother Nature is a powerful force that must be respected. I’ve never seen a tree that was burned from the lightening before. I’m sorry that happened, but really glad you posted that picture. I’m SO thankful that your fence survived without any damage.
Thanks ladies! We drove around the neighborhood today on our way to a friends house, and holy crap, was there a lot of trees taken down. There was one stretch with a lot of big trees uprooted or just broken off at the trunk. It was a tad windy!
My goodness, what a mess. So glad you and your property survived the storm. I don’t want the storm, but please send rain. Consecutive days of 105F to 108F is killing everything here, including me.
Wow…amazing the damage that can be done. Glad that you guys are okay!
Thanks Melody and Maya. We went for a walk last night and spoke to some neighbors. One neighbor lost ALL the trees in their yard. The path to the lake probably won’t be cleared for a few weeks at least since they have to deal with the many, many trees that are down in people’s yards first. I’m really glad we didn’t lose more.
There have been some bad thunderstorms lately. Last night we lost some little branches…nothing like this though. Hope things are getting cleared up.
[…] straight-line winds are pretty damaging, as we found out last fall. Ever been outside when straight line winds hit? I have, at night, when you couldn’t tell […]
