In our nearly constant desire to expose the small children to “culture”…we took them to the horse races.

So we could drink beer, eat cheese curds and gamble.

Culture

*fist pump*

It was a pleasant day, that was supposed to be in the 80’s, but ended up being in the 70’s with a brisk breeze.  This led to the purchase of sweatshirts for the little ones, to keep the complaining to a moderate level.

I felt a bit sorry for the young lady I saw dressed in jean “shorts” and a bustier half-top.  I bet she was cold.  Of course, what she was wearing was less than what my bathing suit covers on the beach, so really perhaps she should have dressed less like a street walker.  Not really looking forward to when Anya is a teenager.  I hope the grunge phase is back and all she wants to wear is big flannel shirts and baggy jeans.

We gambled, mostly losing our $2/horse bets until the impossible happened

Brian won a trifecta bet!  He turned his $2 bet into $129!!!!  Woot!!!!!!

I even got a picture of that race.

When I got back to where Brian was sitting, he looked almost shocked.  He thought he got it, but we had to wait for the official standings.  When they came in, he went and got his winnings.  That pretty much covered our day at the races.  Unlike last time, when we actually won on many of the races, this time we lost on most of the races.  A lot of horses had scratched, as we got 5″ of rain overnight.  They couldn’t race on the inside turf, and instead had to race on the track for all of the races.  This led to some races where over half of the horses were pulled out.

It was still a pretty fun day, though.  That night we had intended to head to the one and only drive-in movie theatre in the metro area.  Apparently, the rest of the metro had that plan in mind, as well.  When we got there about an hour before sunset, there was a mile long line in either direction.  As we drove past the entrance, it was already full from what we could tell.  Those people waiting in line were not going to be happy!  We still made it to a movie, though, since it was promised to the kids.  We saw Despicable Me 2, and closed out the day with happy kids. 🙂
