Saturday Kailan was invited to his first birthday party with one of his little daycare friends.  His little friend, Tommy, was turning 3.  The big decision for me was what to get Tommy.  Kailan loves his Matchbox and Hot Wheels cars.  LOVES THEM.  Now I was thinking that since Kai is such a big fan that Tommy would surely like them, too.

However.

If Kailan gave Tommy a present that contained the coveted cars, he might just throw a major fit.  Once the realization hit him that he couldn’t bring the cars home…oh my goodness, tears and screaming would surely ensue!  So, upon having this mortifying vision, I decided on the safer route.  Thomas The Train.  Kailan only has one train so he was fine with giving that as a gift.  He even put his one train in the gift bag, but once I was able to explain that Tommy would be keeping the train, he retrieved it and put it at a safe distance from the bag.  The next obstacle was having Kailan not tell Tommy that he was getting him a train.

Kai did very well at the party.  He didn’t tell Tommy what he was getting him until Tommy started opening his present.  Even then, I’m not sure he understood Kai.  I’m probably the only one in the room that understood what he was saying.

It was hard for Kai to concentrate on the gift opening, though.  Tommy is one of 2.5 boys (his mama is still cooking boy #3), and they had car heaven in their family room.  The boys dived right into all the cars.  There were cars of every size and shape.  Kai was taking them out and carefully lining them up on their hearth.

After the gift opening and cake was pinata time.  The kids were actually able to break it open and all the kids did relatively well at aiming the bat.  Tons of candy were their prize, and Kai got his fair share.

I was really happy how Kai handled the afternoon.  He is normally so shy in new places, but once he saw those cars, he was in his element.  He had a few of his good friends from daycare at the party, so it was quite the fun time!
