I made this up one night last week and really enjoyed the flavors of it. Syrupy glazes always add so much flavor to fish at restaurants, so I thought I would try my hand at making one. It was super easy, but the pan got a bit sticky so make sure to use some Teflon.
The sides were a batch of plain basmati rice and boiled edamame with sea salt. The kids ate the fish but weren’t really interested in the rest of the accompaniments. Oh well, they have no taste buds! That’s my theory. 😉
Recipe:
3 Tilapia filets
1 egg
1/2 cup bread crumbs
2-3 TBSP olive oil
1/2 cup soy sauce
2-3 TBSP honey
1 tsp dried wasabi spice*
Rinse the fish and pat dry. Wisk the egg up in a shallow bowl and place breadcrumbs in another shallow bowl. Coat the fish in the egg and then the breadcrumbs. Place in skillet with the hot olive oil – about medium to medium high heat. Cook for about 4 minutes and then turn over for another 4 minutes.
Meanwhile, put the soy sauce, honey and wasabi in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil and reduce by at least half. It will be thick and syrupy when ready. Make sure to stir it while it is boiling.
Place fish on top of rice and put glaze over both. Enjoy!
*I got my wasabi spice from Penzey’s spices. Check out their website and see if there is a store near you. Otherwise, just order online if you like to cook and try their different and quality spices. You can find spices and spice mixes on their website that you can’t find anywhere else. Love them!
Oh, I just clipped this – it sounds amazing! I love fish and always order it when I’m out…I’m trying to get the rest of the family on board! This sounds like it might work…
And I totally miss Penzeys. Need to do an online order soon.
Definitely try it, Carrie, it’s yummy!
I forgot to add that if I had panko I would have breaded the tilapia in that – you can find it in the asian section of the grocery store. Also…you don’t need to put much glaze on each fish. The syrup is packed with flavor so a little goes a long way! 🙂
Mmmm… I love breaded fish (I usually dust with flour or cornstarch(so egg will stick), then egg, then panko) and I especially love a sweet glaze! I’ll definitely try the soy, honey and wasabi next time! Thanks for sharing! Do you ever take photos of your dishes b/c I’d be drooling looking at them~!
Laura, I usually forget to take pictures! I’m generally in such a rush to get dinner on the table that I forget to take a picture. I really need to remember to do that more often. 🙂
You are always making me hungry…I love the recipes you post…especially the sun dried tomato dip.
