In my efforts to get us to consume what we have before buying a bunch more food, I have cleaned out my pantry to see what I’ve got. We have a nice big pantry, but it isn’t exactly easy to find things in it. It’s basically a narrow closet with 4 shelves. I went through it and tossed what was expired and figured out what I had for making meals. What a mess!
Brian thought that he could get some new shelves to put in the pantry that would make it much more user friendly, but that would have cost around $500. We passed on that, since eventually we want to redo our kitchen and the pantry would get a makeover at that point anyways. Plus, we are trying to save money, right??
It’s amazing what you can find when you organize things!
Really…it is organized! You should have seen it before!
Next I made a list of recipes and got back to planning my meals out. This way I will know just what I need when I go grocery shopping. I always have to go anyways to get our 2 gallons of skim milk, cheese and yogurt every week. I’m hoping to keep away from all the “extra’s” though. It is still amazing how much you can spend on 2 bags of groceries, though. We go to Costco for those items that we can save in bulk. Chicken breasts are so much cheaper, as is the cheese. Most especially, the colored (red/orange/yellow) sweet peppers. I love making them on the grill and can get them for 1/2 the cost of the grocery store.
Another money saving endeavor…freezing my fresh herbs, so I can use them during the winter. I’ll talk about that next week. 🙂
Do I really see SPAM on your table. Is that a keeper?
To be honest I have never tried spam, so it might just be the best kept secret.
I have a similar pantry. I hate it. You can’t see what’s in the back at all. The shelves should be pull out or something.
Too funny. I’ve been doing *exactly* the same things — organizing the pantry and freezing herbs.
LOL…yes I have a small can of SPAM! My mom used to make these really good hot sandwiches with SPAM. I’ve had it for awhile, so I don’t use it very often. It’s actually not bad!
My pantry is really deep so things get lost in the back of the pantry. My freezer is desperately needing a clean out. Who knows what I will find in there? I think your pantry looks very organized. The key will be keeping it that way, right?
I love Costco! Their price on grape tomatoes…which we eat like candy around here…is awesome! Plus, formula, diapers, etc., etc.!
We’re on the same kick… trying to make sure we use what we have before buying more.
Why is it so hard to use the FIFO method with our groceries? 🙂
I get dibs on worst pantry EVER!!
Half of each shelf is behind the wall. Go figure!! It’s not easy storing or finding stuff back there.
Good job – doesn’t it feel GOOOOOD!?!
Wait till you see what I’m working on this weekend 🙂
Beth
That is AN AMAZING jar of Jiffy!!!! 😉 We buy a lot of the same things… interesting… let’s share recipes! 🙂
wait. That’s Skippy…not JIFF… and I called it JIFFY!! HA HA HA HA
Wanna come make over my pantry next???
My husband actually loves Spam – or rather – Treet Meat.
I imagine that’s how my pantry would look all unloaded.. have to admit it’s been on my to do list for quite some time.
Can’t wait to hear about what you do with your herbs. I’d like to figure out what I can do with all of the basil and dill I have outside…..
Organization is good! Great job on the cabinet. Sometimes it is scary to discover what go shoved all the way to the back that you forgot about. 😉
Isn’t it amazing to see all the food you have! I did this recently too and I couldn’t believe everything I had!
