In my efforts to get us to consume what we have before buying a bunch more food, I have cleaned out my pantry to see what I’ve got.  We have a nice big pantry, but it isn’t exactly easy to find things in it.  It’s basically a narrow closet with 4 shelves.  I went through it and tossed what was expired and figured out what I had for making meals.  What a mess!

Brian thought that he could get some new shelves to put in the pantry that would make it much more user friendly, but that would have cost around $500.  We passed on that, since eventually we want to redo our kitchen and the pantry would get a makeover at that point anyways.  Plus, we are trying to save money, right??

It’s amazing what you can find when you organize things!

Really…it is organized!  You should have seen it before!

Next I made a list of recipes and got back to planning my meals out.  This way I will know just what I need when I go grocery shopping.  I always have to go anyways to get our 2 gallons of skim milk, cheese and yogurt every week.  I’m hoping to keep away from all the “extra’s” though.  It is still amazing how much you can spend on 2 bags of groceries, though.  We go to Costco for those items that we can save in bulk.  Chicken breasts are so much cheaper, as is the cheese.  Most especially, the colored (red/orange/yellow) sweet peppers.  I love making them on the grill and can get them for 1/2 the cost of the grocery store.

Another money saving endeavor…freezing my fresh herbs, so I can use them during the winter.  I’ll talk about that next week. 🙂
