Spoonflower has a weekly design contest whereby you can win 5 yards of fabric. The timing worked out perfectly for me, since I want to buy fabric. Funny how that works, huh? (Yeah, I know…when DON’T I want to buy fabric??) I thought I might actually have a shot at winning, but unfortunately I am at the bottom of the pack. Absolute bottom. Some of the submissions aren’t really all that orginal, but that is what people like so they invariabley vote for that one. There are some really well done ones, though, so that is nice to see.
I sat down to draw on one rainy, depressing day while I was home with our flu victim. Us girls were drawing girls. I drew a couple of “dolls” for me and a few for Anya. I scanned them and the charcoal pencil lines were pretty sparse, so I had to redraw them in Photoshop. Drawing with my Wacom pen is a learning process, but I am gradually getting better at it.
Once I had the outline of the dolls completed, I filled in their clothes. The patterns and designs are ones that I drew. I’m not sure how they will print, but it was fun to do!
This is the one I submitted:
DARLA
Here are a few other ones I did, too (click to make bigger):
I had about 10 other things that I could have been doing, but apparently I like to waste time. It seems to be a habit of mine. I am learning to get better at my drawing in Photoshop, so I guess that was good practice for it. 😀
I am working on a fabric design that I want to order for my craftroom. I’m thinking curtains and maybe recovering a chair. We’ll see what strikes my fancy. Not sure yet…I might tweak it a bit before printing.
I didn’t get much done this past week. The fevers, the funeral and all of life’s happenings got in the way of being productive. I did finish up Anya’s pink silk dress with the fastenings and made myself a cute little scarf. Oh, and I hemmed some pants. So…I guess I got a few things done, but not all that I wanted. At least I have the Halloween costumes all done….oooh, wait…I have to make their little bags yet. Shoot! Well, I’ve got a few days at least.
I’ve been trying to go to bed at a reasonable time, so I don’t get sick like the rest of the family. The kids are gradually getting better. Still plenty of runny noses, but that is doubtful to end before springtime. 🙁
Well, I have to say that I love Darla. I guess I should just click over but if you won would Darla be printed on fabric for you? That yellow pattern you created would look awesome on a chair.
You are so creative!!! I wish I had creativity like that! 🙂 My poor Chloe will never have cool things made by her mama, because I can’t even sew on a button. haha.
and I agree with Melody– that yellow pattern would make a fantastic chair!
I need to go check out that contest. It sounds very cool. I am notorious for starting a new project when I have a million other ones that need to be completed. It is more fun that way. Your drawings are fantastic. I can’t believe you can do that in photoshop. I hope your family gets better soon.
Oh, hey…we have something else in common! I like to waste time on things when I should be doing something else instead! And starting a million projects when I have five million already going. I like to think it is the sign of a very creative mind! 🙂
I hope you are all doing better this week. I LOVE your drawings – they are great, I’ll have to go over and check out the fabric site. Add to my list of projects. Hee.
I think Carla is pretty darn cool! But all this time, I’ve been in awe of your creativity and productivity, and come to find out we actually do have something in common: “I had about 10 other things that I could have been doing, but apparently I like to waste time.” hehe!
wasting time is one of my favorite things to do:o) and I am so darn good at it…LOL Hope your family is getting better. We seem to be on the mend around here,
I’m with ya on the runny noses and the coughing and hacking and the general feeling of unease going around. Oddly enough it’s not the flu but it feels like enough of the other stuff to more than make up for that. I bet you’re way glad to have those halloween costumes all taken care of already. 😉 The dolls are cute. I hope you win, my fabric addicted friend.
I’m so glad you stopped by my blog today! I laughed when I read your comment about picky 4 and 5 year olds. I do have some recipes that my 2, 4 and 6 year old all like but they are few and far between. I’ll shoot you an email when I have a chance!
I showed my 19 and 16 year old daughters your site, and the oldest wondered if you have Photoshop Illustrator? She has photoshop but said she wasn’t sure if she could draw like that with just plain photoshop.
We were all impressed with your design!
