Being a photographer, I’m always trying to get the best portrait of others. Finding the most flattering lighting and poses so they look their best. Trying to show the best “them” that they are at that point in their lives. I rarely get photos taken of me, being usually behind the camera. When I do have photos they generally aren’t the most flattering…it is rare that a snapshot is flattering to most people. How many times do you see a picture of yourself chewing your food at a holiday party or with your mouth agape and hands flailing in the air while talking? They are fun (or funny…or embarrassing!) photos of a moment in time, but having something flattering to look at when you are 80 would be kinda nice, too, right??
It is time to take a picture of yourself again. I did this at one point last year, when I had intended on taking more self portraits in 2008. It did not get done, of course. I think I got three, and two were just me modeling some stuff I made. It takes time to get everything set up and time to make yourself look nice, which is generally in scant supply around here. My plan for this year is to try to get at least one self portrait a month. My hopes are that I can be creative with this project. I don’t want to just produce headshots. I want to use this as a way of self expression, and also to practice posing. That is one thing that I really struggle with when taking pictures of others. Posing is my downfall.
I would like everyone to challenge themselves to not just take a spur of the moment – I have two extra seconds – photograph, but one where you take the time to get the best picture of you. Where when you look at it, you can say, “Man, I can look good when I’m not wearing fleece comfies, comb my hair and put some makeup on!” I’m talking about a feel good photo and boost to your self esteem.
I’m ahead of the game, and have a few here already. Last Saturday I had a fresh red head dye job, and that is the best time to get a shot of it before it start fading. Taking a self portrait is also the only time I get to do fun makeup, since I can’t exactly go to work like this…or really anywhere. 😉 I used to spent lots of time putting on makeup when I was a teenager. I got in one of those clubs where they sucker you in with free stuff at the beginning and then make you buy makeup for the next 2 years. I stockpiled a bit of makeup then and tried it all out. I remember coming out of my room with dark blue eye shadow on my eyes and my mom giving me one of those “looks”. It was the 80’s after all. 😉
I took these in our dining room. I have blue eyes, so I knew the blue of the wall would work well for that. I used a tripod with my speedlight pointed at the white ceiling and my 50mm lens. I used the remote, and it took me a bit to figure out that I need to select the delay for the remote so that it would actually have a chance to focus before it fired. You would think I would have figured that out by now!
I took many, many pictures. There were quite a few out of focus since I would be in the wrong spot, and just some unflattering angles, so don’t feel bad if it takes quite a few to get it right. Figure out what works. This also helps in getting other people to pose when you do it yourself.
Technicals: f2.2, ISO 800, SS 1/40
Brian chose this last picture to put in his office at work. He thinks I look like a ghost in the rest of them. It replaced the other picture he had of me looking like Loreena McKennit. He has gotten asked if that picture came with the frame several times LOL! Having unusual pictures of your wife in your office might be just a bit odd, eh?? 😉
See YOU on Thursday! I actually did mine already, and included the kids. I knew I had to squeeze it in when I had time, so I’m on the ball for once and not scrambling on Wednesday night. I wanted to get the kiddos in the shot with me, since that rarely happens, too. I hope everyone has fun with this one. 🙂
Fabulous pictures.
You clean up real well Stacy::: I can hardly imagine you in blue jeans and flannel shirt butchering at your Mom and Dads table, or helping him cape out a critter!!!! LOL Although they are all good, I think I have to go with Brian’s choice.
If Rach decides to do this I’m going to talk her out of entering the one of herself puckering, after the horse threw mud all over her, LOL even if that one really does it for me.
Ooooh baby!
Those turned out great! Like you, I have very few pics of myself and, well, my husband is horrible with a camera. Can we say totally and completely unflattering and most are out of focus?! Yikes. Lately I have been doing the teenager take-it-yourself-while-holding-it-at-arms-length thing. Just to have a few pics of me with my kids. Your first and last are my favorites of these four. You did such a great job! I just might have to try this challenge this week. Should be interesting anyway!
I tried the self-portrait thing (thank you very much Mr. Daddy for the goofy comment!) and man did I realize quickly how hard it was! Didn’t help that I was in grungy horse clothes with a hat and mud everywhere. Yeah, I felt real glamorous!
Thankfully Mr. Daddy makes a point of getting me in some pictures. I realize sometimes that I will miss being part of all those memories in the scrapbooks if I don’t just man up and ask someone to include me in a shot.
The pictures are great… you have really beautiful eyes and your hair is so radiant!
Any why on earth couldn’t you go out made up like that? Here in the Pacific Northwest, that would not be unusual at all to see 🙂
Umm it Helps that you’re drop dead gorgeous girl lol. Love those pics!
Well, thanks so much for the compliments! 🙂
Wow. Those are amazing. This one will be a hard one, but hopefully fun!!! I will get to practice with my remote and maybe even put on some makeup.
Oh the last is by far my favorite too. I love it.

How are we supposed to measure up to that?! But I have been wanting to try it. Darn it that my hair appointment is on THAT Thursday so I may have to get real creative in making myself look good.
These are so fantastic. Just incredible.
I don’t think I’ve EVER seen a photo of myself that I like 🙂
A self protrait?! You really are asking a lot. I don’t do well on both sides of the camera at once. But you sure do! Wow, these are awesome. I love the mask, and I adore your hair!
I have done it once before and thought it was harder, maybe this time it will be easier.
Stacey~ You look amazing- fresh hair, beautiful makeup. I really like how playful you got with the camera.
gorgeous! those are just beautiful. i’m very scared now…but we’ll see what we can come up with!
These are stunning.
And then there’s me, who takes self-portraits so often that people probably get really tired of seeing my face around… 😛
I’m excited to see what other folks do, though!
you, sweet Stacy, are beyond vibrant!
Ok I’m impressed. I so love the color of your hair too. I used to have a lovely red shade but now, well, I’ve been told pregnancy and hair color don’t mix. Although I may go red again, it’s such a wonderfully vibrant color, and it looks great with those blue eyes of yours. I’m not entirely sure what kind of self portrait I’m going to come up with considering I have no flash on my camera right now. I’ll have to think about this one.
I’m going to try really really hard to get in on this. It sounds like a lot of fun. Can’t wait for Thursday!
That mask shot took my breathe away. You do wonderfully capturing yourself.
What a scary theme this week! :o) Icant wait to see what everyone comes up with!
Gorgeous!! I am not sure what I can come up with, but I am sure going to try my best to have something to show on Thursday!
I want to thank you all again for the very nice compliments, and hope I have lots of participants this week! 😀
Oh my I love the mask shot!!! You are GORGEOUS!
Awesome pictures. I love your hair color and you do have some amazing eyes.
I hope (crossing my fingers) that I will be able to get the “assignment” done. I really do need to take a few pictures of me. My husband had someone comment on a bunch of pictures on his face book of him and the kids saying, “did you have these kids yourself, I never see a women in any of your photos”.
You watch CSI much? Cause I’ve figured out who you look like…a cross between Catherine/Marg Helgenberger and Lady Heather. :p Either way, you look great! 😀
