Tonight Kailan fell and landed in the wrong spot. He was coming into the room from the sunporch, which has a lip and small step down. He didn’t step up into the room, tripped and landed face first into a chair. His teeth left an impression on the chair and it dislodged them. Bleeding and much crying ensued. I pushed his teeth up into his mouth and we got a cold cloth on it right away. Meanwhile Brian was trying to figure out if we needed to do anything else right away.
I started to feel faint, which happens when my kids get hurt badly. Not something that I like to happen, most definitely. Brian took over the holding and coddling, and I laid down for a few minutes. Then I called the on-call dentist. Didn’t get a call back at 60 minutes, and then Brian called again. He said to put a cold compress on it and just see what happens. If it is still really loose later this week then we will have to bring him in. At 5.5 years old he may lose his two front teeth for years. I feel so bad for him!
Anya didn’t know quite what to do during the whole ordeal. Kailan was screaming and profusely bleeding for the first 10 minutes or so. He quieted down after about a half hour and just vigilantly held his cloth to his mouth. We finally got them to bed at 9pm after having to wait for the dentist to call back. He fell asleep pretty quickly, too, with daddy holding him.

Our children definitely are not graceful. Kailan had his first ER visit at about 20 months old when he fell into the edge of a toy container at daycare. That required 2 internal and 6 external stitches on his forehead. The poor kid his so accident prone.

Now, this beautiful smile may be soon missing his two front teeth. 🙁
O my goodness, Stacy!!! Goodness…. I can’t even imagine how you must have felt… my son had something similar happen when he was 2…and when your children are hurt in a bad way, it is the most awful feeling as a parent.
praying for your sweet boy… and for the momma too!
So very sorry!
My mom’s ER visit recently entailed a badly split lip and three loose teeth. Thankfully, I think you guys did exactly what the treatment is and hopefully he’ll be able to hang onto them.
(Not that I want to disagree with what the doc said, but my mom’s friend is a dental technician who sees these kinds of injuries all the time… she encouraged an immediate dental x-ray – which we got after-hours, thanks to her connections. There are things a dentist can do to help the teeth stay in. It was quite an education).
Surely hope he can hang onto those sweet baby teeth for awhile yet!
So sorry…
seems as if that is the most hopeless and helpless feeling in the world, when your kids get hurt..
Saying a prayer for him and you..
Poor thing. Painful with a capital PAIN! Ouch! Hope he feels better soon. My brother had a mishap in toddlerhood (okay, so it was MY fault) that left him toothless in the front for quite awhile. It was his trademark–and I can’t imagine him at that age without that sweet little gap.
Poor little guy. It’s always the boys that get the doozies. I hope his teeh go right back into place and that there is nothing to major as a result. Sounds like the fall was enough for you all!! 🙁
Oh Stacy! I hope is doing better now and that the dentist gives good news…how upsetting that must have been. I know my biggest fear is something happening to my children, I get a bit whoozey myself.
Poor sweet boy~ Hugs from us!
Oh gosh I got queasy reading about it. Ugh, poor thing. Great thinking on your part cuz I think I might have panicked. He’ll be fine though I’m sure.
Poor guy, hope all is well and the teeth tighten up.
poor kai. and poor mommy! I’m glad he’s alright…at least, as alright as the situation allows. I’m hoping that his teeth get to stay!
and you’re right… it only takes a second. My boys know that all too well!
Oh my goodness! That is so scary! It’s amazing how we can actually “keep it together,” when we have to! You know? I always feel like I am going to lose it, when the kids get hurt, but somehow I keep my cool! Let us know what happens!
Poor guy. I hope they aren’t hurting too badly now. I totally lose it every time I see my kids bleed. Also when they throw up. I don’t know why that bothers me so badly, but it does.
Good luck with the teeth. Hopefully they stay put until they are ready to come out naturally!
Oh No! I hope all is well, bless his heart!
Oh poor little guy. I will be honest. I felt a little faint just reading the story. I am so sorry.
The silver lining is that they are his baby teeth and not the permanent ones! This just happened to my friend’s granddaughter, who is also accident prone. I’m glad he’s okay and even if he loses these teeth, new ones will grow!
Oh no! Poor Kailan!! It sounds like an awful evening!!! I hate it when my kids get hurt – it is the worst feeling in the world. There may be a way for him to get some temporary false teeth to fill in his gap if he does lose them – I think my niece had something like that on one of her baby teeth. But, lets just hope & pray he won’t lose them & you won’t have to worry about it!!
Thanks so much everyone. We really appreciate your kind comments about Kai getting hurt. It was a rather traumatic event for all involved, most definitely! I have a call into the dentist office today to see if they really don’t need to see him. I just want to make sure! He is acting pretty good today…just happy he can have pudding and play on the computer. 🙂
Oh dear, poor little man!!! And poor Mama..us mamas usually have an even harder time with these inguries than the kiddo! I’m crossing my fingers, knocking on wood and hoping & praying that his teeth will be safe.
Thank goodness it is only teeth and he will probably lose them anyway. Just trying to see the sunny side.
My eldest is in themist of losing this front teeth naturally and I feel your pain. He is 6 and it could be a couple of years before the new ones regrow.
When you said, “…I pushed his teeth up into his mouth…”, OMG I thought I was gonna hurl. The things Mommy’s do in the heat of the moment! I hope he is feeling better too.
I saw this and had flashbacks…but I’m off to read the update now….
[…] the stories were not as…eventful…as Kai’s. He dictated as Brian wrote down the horrific tale. I’m sure it will be an interesting read for the teacher. This entry was written by […]
[…] It was much less traumatic than the last time we lost front teeth in our house. […]
