I don’t have sewing to share this week, but not because I didn’t do anything.  I made two SUPER cute baby blankets with the fabulous soft minky/cuddle/chenille fleece (whatever you call it) on one side and a beautiful patterned cotton on the other.  I used 2 inch wide satin binding to finish the edges.  Really…they were cute, so I’m bummed I completely forgot to take pictures of them.  One of my neighbor friends just had a baby though, so I’m sure I’ll be making another soon. 🙂

These past few weeks have been all about the gardening.  We have:

  • Cleaned up all the dead stuff.
  • Filled the front round raised planter with Petunias.  Come July it will be all filled out and overflowing full of lovely color.
  • Trimmed up all the rose bushes…and made sure the kids didn’t try to help me.  The front rose bush is about 15% the size of last year.  The dryness last summer was brutal on it.
  • Transplanted and separated just about every hosta we have.  I hope they all survive because they should really fill in nice.
  • On our “garden hill” I planted some dragonsblood sedum ground cover, petunias and new herbs.  Cleaned up and gave away some of the other perennial herbs that spread way too much.
  • Brian put a new stone path on the garden hill and in our big mulched (ugly and bare!) area.  He also planted some border Lamium plants that should fill in the area nicely.  We are slowly filling in that big area with plants.
  • Picked weeds.

Our crabapple is starting to flower.  Brian and I transplanted all of our hostas in the back of the yard to underneath this tree.  They were in full sun and withered and died during the heat of the summer, so they should like it here.

We have a little bunny problem.  As in the little bastards have eaten several thousands worth of plants, bushes and small trees (with help from the deer we think).  Every year we plant and wait to see what the bunnies eat.  Bunnies are supposed to be afraid of owls, so we bought a fake owl and sat it up on our deck rail overlooking the garden.  The next morning a bunny was eating underneath it.  Damn.

The last few years daycare has planted something in Kai’s class.  We take the plant home and it slowly dies from neglect.  This year I made sure to keep his little plants alive until they could go outside.  The bean plant actually has beans on it!

Lilacs almost ready to flower

Of course there is always more to do!  Our canna’s are growing in the basement and really need to get in the ground.

p.s. – did I ever tell you how much I love my 85mm 1.8 lens?  Because I do…really, really.  I didn’t do much to these other than a contrast and highlight bump in Picassa.
